Question: Is now anyone volunteering for such a task?

The goal again is to produce a tested master CD-ROM ...
  + which starts an UMN MapServer under Linux 
  (whatever and in whatever standard config.) 
  + at least on the most popular WinTel platforms 
  (and perhaps other OS too). 
  + It should then show 
    a) some sample data from CD and 
    b) could also enable a user to enter an URL or another local file 
       in the Shape-Format (and eventually the universal 
       Swiss INTERLIS/XML standard via loader/converter).
